Elixir of the Gods: Gourmet Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Contrary to popular belief, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) isn’t just safe to cook with, it’s the ultimate cooking oil, bar none. As scientific breakthroughs illuminate the path, a research paper from 2018 reveals EVOO’s unparalleled stability amidst the world of cooking oils.

High-quality EVOOs boast significantly higher smoke points than their bargain-bin counterparts. But the true mark of excellence lies in oxidative stability and antioxidant levels, the heart and soul of health benefits. Gourmet EVOO reigns supreme in both arenas. Oxidative stability reflects an oil’s resistance to breaking down and producing harmful compounds when heated, while antioxidant levels contribute to the oil’s overall health-promoting properties. Both of these factors play a significant role in the oil’s nutritional value and are essential to consider when evaluating the excellence of a cooking oil. Astonishingly, one experiment found that after heating premium EVOO at 180°C for 36 hours, it retained nearly all its nutritional value!

From humble beginnings, it takes around four years to start yielding olives. Olive trees usually reach their optimum performance within 25 to 35 years. The most divine EVOOs emerge from trees that have stood for centuries. Case in point: Alberta Iannicelli’s exquisite Sopraffino di Ceraso, a single variety organic EVOO from Cilento, Italy, crafted from olive trees approaching 400 years old.

With over 2,000 olive varieties worldwide, Gourmet Extra Virgin Olive Oil presents a symphony of flavours: artichoke, almond, peppers, chilli, pear, apple, tomato, cut grass and more. When savouring EVOO, consider aroma and taste (sweet, sour, salty, bitter), as well as tactile sensations (spiciness and fluidity). A harmonious blend of rich soil and ambient environment, the olive tree bestows its unique essence upon the final product.

Ladies and gentlemen, the verdict is in: extra virgin olive oil takes the crown as the world’s finest cooking oil. Much like a fine wine elevates a dish, a superior EVOO is the magic ingredient that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.

The greenness of the tomato flavour really stands out. There are herbal nuances on the nose, the aroma of freshly cut grass.
